Small Steps lead to BIG Changes
Environmental action starts with individual choices. The Earth observation sector is filled with people passionate about protecting our planet. When we get together to discuss how we can use our technology to protect our Earth and its people – this year with a focus on SDG monitoring – we think it makes sense to consider our impact on the planet in doing so, and maybe influence a few others to do the same in the process.
EARSC’s goal is to make sustainability the standard rather than an alternative.
We will use the EXPANDEO conference as a first step to raise awareness about climate change and influencing change among attendees and work collaboratively toward protecting the environment. See below the steps we are taking to achieve this ambitious goal.
LOCATION AND TRANSPORTATION
Both of the venues chosen for this event are easily reachable by different green transportation.
- Public transportation: Tram, Metro, Bus
EXPANDEO stimulates visitors to use the public transport system to travel to both of the venues. We will refund the metro/bus tickets to everyone who intends to use public transportation to get to the event. Let us know which means you will use by filling the registration form.
- Bicycles & walking
We are also encouraging walking and ALL EXPANDEO walkers will be rewarded upon their arrival (always with an environmentally friendly and useful gift).
- Travel to Brussels
We will compensate your unavoidable emissions by supporting high-quality climate protection project(s). All participants will be asked to give us information about their travel (origin, way of travelling, days etc) in order to best calculate the CO2 emissions of EXPANDEO. During the last day of the conference, we will announce the chosen project(s).
SUSTAINABILITY AND FOOD
1.3 billion tonnes of food gets wasted every year. We would rather be part of the solutions than the problem, so we will be trying to manage our attendance list accurately as possible.
Please reply to our final confirmation email a couple of days before the event to allow us to get it just right. 😉
Our caterers have been chosen based on the policies and the measures that they take regarding Climate Change. They prefer to work with seasonal and regional products, adapting the menu offering a range of food with veggie, vegan, gluten and lactose-free options.
They never ever used “one way” or plastic cutlery, plates nor glasses and they only use returnable bottles from Glass. They avoid food waste by not having a big stock of food because we are calculating/buying especially for each event.
Our garbage will be strictly separated to recycle as much as possible and this includes that leftover food is collected separately (e.g. for energy production or as animal food) using mainly local service staff living in Brussels, we do have less commuting employees which lowers our company`s CO2 footprint. Furthermore, as most of our events take place within the EU quarter in Brussels centre, our service staff is advised to use public transport such as Metro, Tram or bus, and even the new released e-Scooters all around Brussels become more and more an option for changing e.g. the site within one evening.
Our transports and pick-ups are more and more strategical planned, avoiding unnecessary rides into the city without using synergies and as a consequence, this as well lowers our overall CO2 footprint.
For the close future, we are currently planning to change our entire truck fleet step by step into e-transporters avoiding any CO2 (until 2021).
Since the beginning of the planning, we are conscious of printing. We are now focused on digital marketing which reduces the negative impact on the environment but also gives us flexibility. In case we can’t avoid printing, we will carefully use the right printing format.
PLANNING AND EXECUTION IN GENERAL
EARSC team is committed to making conscious decisions to be sustainable during the whole preparation and execution phase of EXPANDEO.
Our daily way of life has a huge impact on our planet.
TEN SIMPLE THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO TO PROTECT THE EARTH
1. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Cut down on what you throw away. Follow the three “R’s” to conserve natural resources and landfill space.
2. Volunteer. Volunteer for cleanups in your community. You can get involved in protecting your watershed, too.
3. Educate. When you further your own education, you can help others understand the importance and value of our natural resources.
4. Conserve water. The less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater that eventually end up in the ocean.
5. Choose sustainable.
6. Shop wisely. Buy less plastic and bring a reusable shopping bag.
7. Use long-lasting light bulbs. Energy-efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Also, flip the light switch off when you leave the room!
8. Plant a tree. Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change.
9. Don’t send chemicals into our waterways. Choose non-toxic chemicals in the home and office.
10. Bike more. Drive less.
